12 Best Keyword Research Tips To Rank First Page In 2024

Today, Ranking Factors change quickly.

That’s why I’ve listed the best Keyword Research Tips to rank on the first page of Google in 2019.

Google releases daily updates, Social Media often change their rules, but one thing remains: Keywords Research is the key to SEO.

It’s true that Keyword Research has always been fundamental to SEO, but how to do it has changed drastically over the years.

In the past, it was common practice to fill content with your keyword all the times it was possible.

This was known as keyword stuffing.

Now everything’s changed.

Keyword stuffing died years ago.

Rank Brain, the first Google’s machine learning algorithm, is considered a massive change for content creation.

Quality is all, and your content must be topic-oriented to be relevant and amazing for users, and not more keywords-oriented.

First, let’s make a specification:

What is Keyword Research?

Keyword Research is the process of finding what users type in the search engine bar when they are searching for something and, to discover the intent behind those searches.

When you know what keywords users type in the search bar, you can create optimized content that satisfies their searches.

That’s what Google and the other search engines want.

This also what you want, as this allows you to get more traffic and more conversions, the target of keyword research.

How Do I Find The Perfect Keyword for my site?

Create your buyer persona

You can create the best ever content, but if you don’t know who your customers are, then you are creating content that is not going to convert.

When you create your buyer personas, you’ll be able to personalize your content and message and have better conversions.

Create a buyer persona for any of the three sales funnel stages: Top Funnel, Middle Funnel, and Bottom Funnel.

For each of them you want to have the following info:

  • Name
  • Age
  • Job Titles
  • Gender
  • Companies
  • Country
  • Education
  • Hobbies
  • Estimated average incomes
  • Desires
  • Goals

The more info you get, the better.

How to create an effective Buyer Persona?

  • Send an email with a survey to your clients or to your prospects.
  • You can also mail your Linkedin contacts on Linkedin and ask them if they can fill out the form.
  • Check who is already engaging with your content, connect with these people and discover as many info about them.

This will help you make better content for them.

Pro Tip:

When you create a buyer persona for each stage of the funnel, you will have something to offer at every step of the process.

  1. Your top of the funnel buyer persona wants to know more about your niche but is not yet ready to buy.
  2. Your middle funnel buyer persona is really interested in getting more info about you and your niche. This user may subscribe for your mailing list and get a promo code.
  3. Your bottom funnel buyer persona buys from you and you want to make this user a loyal customer that will no look elsewhere.

As you’ll see, names like SEOaddictedJohn and DigitalMarketerMary will sound more familiar for you.

It’s true that Keyword Research is key to SEO, but it’s also true that it’s time-consuming.

You can also spend hours to find the right keywords to create content around them.

But if you use the right Keyword Research Tools, everything’s faster.

I will always say that SEO Tools will not do the job for you, but they’ll help you do it faster.

In the next steps, we’ll dive deeper into the best tools to use for Keyword Research.

Now it’s important to know that the right plugins or extensions can help you make the difference.

How Do You Approach Keyword Research?

Target Long Tail Keywords

This picture comes from the Internet Marketing Star Neil Patel

Now, everyone would love to rank for Seed Keywords, that are generic keywords, like SEO, Digital Marketing, or Women’s Shoes.

That’s really impossible unless you are called Wikipedia or maybe Nike.

But here’s the truth: are you really interested in ranking for the keyword “Outdoor shoes” if you have a small company producing outdoor clothes and shoes?

People who are looking for “outdoor shoes” are probably interested in discovering the latest trends for outdoor shoes.

They are not any step closer to buying.

Maybe they just have some free time and want to discover what to buy on the next Black Friday.

But when people are searching for “Quality Outdoor Boots”, then they have already in their mind the intention to get more info about this category.

When people also search for “Salewa Outdoor Shoes on Sale”, they are probably going to make a purchase soon.

Long Tail Keywords are keywords with more than 3 words and they represent a specific intent.

Seed Keywords are difficult to rank for, but long tail keywords with less search volume and less competition are easier to target.

Users that type long tail keywords go more quickly to the middle and to the bottom of the funnel.

In one word: they convert much better!

Pro Tip:

When you select the long tail keyword for your content pay attention that keywords with more than 5 words get 50 percent clicks less in the SERP.

So don’t exaggerate in choosing too long keywords as they might have so few monthly searches that are not worth the efforts.

Install Keywords Everywhere Chrome Extension

This super useful Keyword analysis tool is amazing to discover the right keywords for your site.

First, install the Keywords Everywhere Chrome Extention.

Now type a seed keyword into the Google Search Bar.

This tool allows you to find:

  • the exact Monthly Search Volume
  • the average CPC
  • the competition score.

It’s like having Google Keyword Planner directly in your Search Page.

Here comes the best:

On the right of the results, you can find a list of “Related Keywords” and a list of “People also Search For keywords”.

For each of them, you find the monthly search volume, the CPC and the competition score.

Simply an amazing Long Tail Keywords Ideas Generator.

Pro Tip:

Type your selected long tail keyword into the GKP to have a longer list of related keywords.

Google Autocomplete

Type a keyword in the search bar and don’t, I repeat don’t, press enter.

You suddenly have a list of related long tail keywords appearing under your typed keyword with your selected one at the beginning.

These keywords are highly searched keywords related to your typed one.

But that’s not over: If you leave space in the search bar and then you type your keyword, you have other suggested related keywords with your selected one at the end.

Thanks to the Keywords Everywhere Tool, you can check for any of them the monthly search volume, the Cost per click and the competition score.

You can analyze each of them and see if they are too competitive or with a too low monthly search volume.

Google Autocomplete is a great way to find ideas for your long tail keywords.

Use Google Related Searches

Like Google Autocomplete, also Google Related Searches allows you to find long tail keywords with less competition and a decent amount of monthly volume.

Type a seed keyword in the Google Search Bar and then scroll till the end of the page.

You’ll find a list of related long tail searches typed by users and that are contextually related to your typed keyword.

This will help you identify which long tail keywords can be targetable and searched by your buyer personas.

Pro Tip:

If you are doing Keyword Research with a small business or with a new website you want to target keywords with a high CPC.

A high CPC tells you that advertisers are ready to bid a lot of money for one keyword which is probably highly profitable.

If you type “Outdoor boots”, you can take “Waterproof hiking boots” that has 12,000 searches per month, which are a little bit too many for a small business.

Try to add a modifier like “Best” so it becomes “Best waterproof hiking boots”

This has 2,400 monthly searches, perfect for a small business, but first of all, perfect to target users close to the middle and bottom of the sales funnel.

I can create a post like “5 Features of the best waterproof hiking boots”.

People that look for “Best” lists or checklists are more likely to convert as they are informing about the best products in a list or the best features to look for.

Their next search can be for “Salewa Waterproof boots discount code” and when users type this search, they are highly like to convert.

How do I do Keyword Research Using Google Keyword Planner

The Google Keyword Planner is still the most used free Keyword Research Tool as it gives you keywords directly from Google’s mouth.

The Keyword Planner was created for Ads on Google, so to use it you need to create an AdWords account.

Don’t worry, you don’t need a PPC campaign to use it.

Most people believe that without a PPC campaign you can’t get the exact monthly volume for your keywords.

Wrong!

As we’ll see later on this post, you can have the exact monthly search volume also without running a paid campaign.

Once you have selected a long tail keyword from the previous steps, you can pop it into the keywords planner.

Select the “Broadly-related keywords” to have an extensive list of related keywords and then click “Get Results”.

In a few seconds, you’ll have a list of broadly-related keywords that are both seed and longtail.

You can set the number of suggested keywords to be 50 or 100, the highest the better.

The hard work will pay off, as your competitors won’t probably do it.

In the end, if you do what your competitors do, you will never do better than them.

You want to target long tail keywords with:

  • A decent amount of traffic, ideally above 1,000 searches per month
  • A high CPC
  • A medium or low competition

Once you’ve chosen your keyword, you want to type it in the search bar and check who your competitors are.

If you find only authorities, then it’s better to focus on another keyword as it may be almost impossible to rank for it.

Pro Tip:

With the Keywords Everywhere Chrome Extension, instead of monthly volume ranges, you get accurate monthly volume data without any need to run a paid campaign.

In fact, you have a new column next to the monthly volume ranges, called “Volume(Global)” with the exact monthly search.

Cool right?

Google Trends

This is one of the most underrated keyword research tips yet in 2019.

You may have created a masterpiece, but if it is optimized around a keyword whose popularity is going down, you may finish asking yourself why you are not getting much traffic.

Google Trends allows you to check if a keyword or a search is expected to be popular or not in the near future.

If your keyword is going to be popular, it’s useless to say that you need to continue and put as many efforts as possible to create amazing content around it.

Otherwise, don’t waste your time, focus on another keyword.

Hack Quora to find Long Tail Keywords

Sometimes the keywords you find in Google, included the GKP, are targeted by too many competitors.

In fact, you can find so many contents created and optimized for those keywords that ranking high on Google is close to impossible.

What next?

Some alternative strategies are needed.

You need to find untapped keywords with a good volume and less competition and at the same as profitable as possible.

Quora is a question and answer forum, where people ask questions and often experts and influencers reply to those questions directly on Quora.

You can type your seed keyword in Quora and check which questions are asked related to that keyword.

Look for the questions with the highest number of views and followers.

By the way, if other people are looking for answers to a specific question, then creating a solution would solve many people’s issue.

You will never find these questions in other tools like the GKP.

I love trekking, so I often search for “Outdoor Boots”, but when I type it in Quora I can see related questions that don’t have many views.

Then I’ve tried to type the keyword “Trekking Shoes”, very similar to the original keyword and, boom!

I’ve found several questions but the first one, which has the most answers, really got my attention.

In fact, the question “What is the best trekking shoe brand(with price) for Himalayan treks?”

I guessed: “Oh My God, who made this question is really close to the buying process”.

They want to know the best trekking shoe and its brand, and they also want to know the price.

You will never find this in any other keyword analysis tool.

There’s more: this question got more than 50,000 views.

That means many people are interested in knowing the brand and the price for this kind of product.

Actually, it takes little time to uncover amazing long tail keywords from those questions and create content around them.

If I was a Digital Marketer for a trekking shoe company, I would definitely create a page or a post with this title: “The best trekking shoe for Himalayan treks”.

I would put inside some stories from people who used this product for Himalayan treks with some amazing pictures.

Then I would create a link to a pop up get visitors’ email address and give them a 10 percent promo discount code.

How many Times Do I Need To Use A Keyword?

This is not properly about keyword research, but it’s about keywords optimization.

As I talked about keyword research tips for 2019, I think it is important to specify also how to use them, first of all for small businesses.

For On-page SEO, Google is focused on user experience and on document relevancy.

They want to give the best possible user experience to their users.

To rank high, you need to create super useful content, that is also readable and enjoyable, with multimedia and short paragraphs.

With regard to keywords, you don’t have to go into keyword stuffing.

For best results, avoid using your focused keywords more than 2 or 3 times throughout your post or page.

Then you can use other related keywords, like the ones suggested by Google Autocomplete and Google Related Searches.

This will increase the relevancy of your content and create a better user experience as you will not repeat your keyword again and again.

Use Keyword in your Title Tag, in H1, in Meta Description, and in the first 100 words

First:

Your Keyword must be in your Title tag, possibly at the front.

This will increase your relevancy and your CTR in the SERP as people immediately understand what your content is about.

Second:

Your keyword must be present also in the meta description and in your slug to increase your On-Page SEO effectiveness.

Third:

Google puts a lot of attention to your H1 and optimizing your Heading tags is absolutely a must for On-Page SEO.

Use your main keyword in your H1 tag and then use semantically related keywords in the H2, H3 and so on.

You usually want to use only one H1 and then H2 and H3 should be enough for most types of content.

Fourth:

The first part of your content is highly considered from Google and you want to use your main keyword once in the first 100 words to increase document relevancy.

LSI Keywords

Latent Semantic Indexing keywords are words that are semantically related to your content.

These terms will make your content more relevant for the search engines, more readable for users, and they allow you to avoid keywords stuffing.

Lsi Graph really helps out in finding the best LSI keywords that you can use throughout your content.
